Jacqueline Cook - Week 7- 10 Key Takeaways

While listening to Noga and Josh talk about their project Red and Boiling, I was so moved by their artistic process in how they created the show and how what we have learned in Arts Activism can be directly used in the real world. My 10 key takeaways are:
.)Understanding your privileges and then using that knowledge to check yourself in your artistic practice, but then not letting that stop you from telling the story you know needs to be told. I learned that its how you use your knowledge of your privilege to go about your artwork. For example, Noga telling the stories of black lesbian women and how she used her privilege of being white to better understand HOW she has to share their story.
.)Being curious and courage to ask questions or tell stories that are controversial or where some may think you don't have the right to share that story. Ex. me asking Nic what pronouns mean. You may make a mistake and fall on your face, but as long as you're constantly seeking understanding and learning from your mistakes.
.)How shadow puppets are effective in allowing the audience to identify with a story rather than having race or gender be a boundary.
.) Not having your work be precious. It is so important that you can revaluate what you have created and maybe rip apart sections in order to tell a more truthful reality.
.)You need to be aware of who your taking advice from and what their agenda is. Even authority figures that you trust and that don't have any ill intentions can fog your vision or your experience. Be careful.
.)Understanding that some shows you go to are not for you. Being aware that I am going to, say, a show about LGBTQ experience and then knowing my place and how I can learn from that.
.) Creating your artwork based on what you want to say and NOT on how it looks.
.) What are your longterm goals for this piece? How do you want your art to reach more people and go further in time? Example of Red and Boiling going to an educational background.
.)Never apologize for your artwork or your statement. You don't owe anyone an apology.
.)The importance of research and knowing what you are talking about. If you want to explore this controversial topic or if you are on the side of privilege, learn as much as you can about the topic and continue learning throughout your creative process.
