Tactics: Creative Disruption
I find creative disruption interesting because of the many different forms it can manifest in. Creative disruption can come as a form of theater, breaking into song, or a collective gathering at a Q & A holding signs and banners but the objective is to not limit the opponents ability of free speech but to add and express your own opinions while not restricting theirs. I especially enjoyed the use of “Glitter Bombs” because the form is harmless and yet gets to the point and remains on the objective for hours as a constant reminder of the issues that they are presented with. One of the challenges of creative disruption is that it could be very easy to have it backfire, your opponent already has leverage with the gathering of supporters, you causing a distraction can easily turn the situation into an attack on their speech or ideas and gain sympathy among the others at the event.
Principles: Brand or be branded
Branding can seem as a dull word for activism, but when we get down to it, the word only suggests “ the set of expectations, memories, stories, and relationships that, taken together, account for a consumer’s decision to choose one product or service over another.” Anyone can use branding to help their cause, if you craft a message for your intended audience, then that audience will want to know more about your cause. Branding is an important tool because it engages people in a dialog that appeals to them and that they might be used to, I loved the quote “ Think of your group’s brand as a water spewing out of a hose. You can either leave the hose on the ground, or you can pick it up and direct its flow”. People brand if they want to or not, it may not be as bold as some other forms of branding but everybody does it, it’s just a matter of how you utilize the tool.
Theories: Memes
I never really thought about memes other than funny little creations on social media that you enjoy and continue to scroll past on social media, but memes have the power to stir up change. A meme is like a viral frame that allows a story to spread, carrying a certain idea with it. A meme can be a perfect way to get your views out to a vast amount of other in a very short amount of time, however, it also has the ability to get out of hand and out of your control. A meme can be changed or altered with the changing of hand of viewers and be twisted to no longer follow your beliefs or be turned against you. Once a meme gets out to the public, it can manifest into many forms.
